A message from the President

The A. E. Crandall Hook and Ladder Company was formed in 1887, incorporated under the laws of New York State as a Not for Profit (501 (c) (3)) corporation, and consists of individuals who have been elected to membership in accordance with the By-Laws. Anyone who lives or works, or who is a student, in our service area can be considered for membership.

Our mission is to provide fire suppression and rescue services in the Village of Alfred, New York, and to provice of advanced life support ambulance services to the entire Town of Alfred, New York, and to parts of the Towns of Ward and Hartsville, New York. Along with help from our mutual aid partners in Alfred Station, Almond, Andover, and several other towns, we have provided first class emergency services for the Village and surrounding areas on a volunteer basis. There is no charge for our service.

As volunteers who wish to aid our neighbors in times of need, we make a commitment of time to become trained as a firefighter, an EMT, or both, and to respond as needed. The results of our fundraising efforts can thus be put directly to the financing of the equipment including fire trucks and ambulances, and the acquisition of supplies, necessary to support the services we provide.

We depend on members of the community to volunteer to become members of A.E. Crandall, and to help supply the people we need to respond to our roughly 700 calls a year, of which about half are ambulance calls. The larger our membership, the fewer times a given person would need to respond. Without enough trained volunteers, we would be unable to mount an adequately staffed emergency response. Unfortunately, turning to paid providers would be nearly prohibitively expensive.

I thus encourage residents, workers, and students over the age of 18 in the Village and surrounding Town of Alfred to consider joining the A. E. Crandall Hook & Ladder Co., Inc. Members choose whether to emphasize fire or EMT training (or both.) Applications for membership can be picked up from the Village Clerk’s office at Village Hall, membership, or from members of the company. I can be reached at weaverm@alfred.edu.

Sincerely,

Marion O. Weaver
President
